In 1926, a bit more than 2 years after the glorious 1923 recordings with his Creole Jazz band, King Oliver started recording for Brunswick, with a brand new band as King Oliver’s Jazz Band, then, following some personnel changes as King Oliver & his Dixie Syncopators, up until 1929. These recordings were released on Vocalion’s race series and/or on Brunswick general series. On the later, the band often appears as The Savannah Syncopators, without having Oliver mentioned in the name. The pseudonym was exclusive to Oliver’s bands…but not only.

On this US brunswick from 1931, King Oliver’s band appears as The Savannah Syncopators, as expected, with the song “Who’s Blue ?”. On the flip side, the name actually hides Louis Russel & his Orchestra. Luis Russel was part of Oliver’s band back in 1926 & 1927.
This track was recorded in September 1930 in New York, and kept aside until this release for some reason…

Louis Russel & his Orch. “Honey That Reminds Me” (MxE35760)

On this french Brunswick, the pseudonym hides Fletcher Henderson & his Connie Inn Orchestra. The same pseudonym was used on the original US release, Br 6176. Released late 1931, the name was used when Oliver was back to Brunswick for a short time, after two years spent with Victor.

Rec. 07/31
Fletcher Henderson & his Connie Inn Orch. “Low DOwn On The Bayou” (Mx E36925A)
Fletcher Henderson & his Connie Inn Orch. “Radio Rhytm” (Mx E36927A)

The name was also used on Br 7124 for two sides of Jimmie Noone’s Apex Club Orchestra.
